At Purpl, the UK’s first disabled discount website, our founder is a disabled woman, as am I, and so we understand the difficulties and barriers to living with a disability. When it comes to planning a day out, there are so many things to worry about, from whether the venue is wheelchair accessible to the accessible toilets. 

It can be hard to find accessible things to do for yourself or for all the family, especially if you’re looking for things to do during half-term! So we have produced a list of some of our favourite accessible days out with some incredible discounts for Purpl members! 

Here are ten top accessible days out across the UK:

Chessington World of Adventures, Surrey

Chessington World of Adventures Resort is dedicated to providing an enjoyable and accessible experience for all guests, including disabled people and their families. The resort offers a range of services and facilities to ensure comfort and convenience throughout your visit.

Ride Access Pass

To assist guests who may find it difficult to stand for extended periods due to physical disabilities, cognitive conditions, energy limiting or chronic pain or fatigue conditions, Chessington offers a Ride Access Pass. This virtual queuing system allows guests to reserve ride times via a smartphone, reducing the need to wait in physical lines. Applications for the Ride Access Pass must be completed online at least seven days prior to your visit. The pass is available in two types:

  • Red Ride Access Pass: For guests requiring assistance boarding or evacuating rides due to mobility impairments or cognitive conditions. A personal assistant or carer must accompany the guest.
  • Yellow Ride Access Pass: For guests who can board and evacuate rides independently but are unable to wait in physical queues due to medical conditions.

Please note that possession of a registered disability does not automatically qualify a guest for a Ride Access Pass. Detailed information on the application process and required documentation is available on the resort’s Accessibility Guide.

Carer Tickets

Guests with disabilities are entitled to one free carer ticket. To obtain this, present appropriate documentation (such as a Disability Living Allowance letter or a Blue Badge) along with photo ID at the ticket office upon arrival. It’s essential to pre-book all tickets online, including carer tickets, before your visit. More details on acceptable documentation and booking procedures can be found on the Accessibility Planning & Tickets page.

Accessible Facilities

The resort is equipped with various facilities to accommodate guests with additional needs:

  • Toilets: Accessible restrooms are located throughout the park. A dedicated ‘Changing Place’ facility is available in Shipwreck Coast, featuring a height-adjustable changing bench, shower, toilet, and hoist. Access requires a RADAR key, which can be borrowed from the Ride Access Pass Information Hub in Adventure Point with a refundable deposit.
  • First Aid: Located in the Forbidden Kingdom next to the entrance of ZUFARI: Ride into Africa!, the First Aid center offers medical assistance and cold storage for medications.

Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter Hire

Wheelchairs and mobility scooters are available for hire at the Lodge Gate:

  • Wheelchairs: £10 per day, plus a £50 refundable pre-authorisation on a credit or debit card. Registered disabled guests with appropriate documentation may hire a wheelchair free of charge, though the pre-authorisation still applies.
  • Mobility Scooters: £35 per day, plus a £50 refundable pre-authorisation.

Due to the hilly nature of the park, guests are advised to exercise caution when using powered mobility devices. It’s recommended to bring personal wheelchairs or scooters to ensure availability and comfort.

Parking

Designated parking spaces for Blue Badge holders are available on a first-come, first-served basis in the Lodge Gate Car Park. A valid Blue Badge must be displayed, and standard parking fees apply. Parking tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance gates.

Assistance Dogs

Assistance and guide dogs are welcome within the theme park. However, they are not permitted on rides or in zoo areas. For further information, guests can contact the Ride Access Pass Information Hub team.

Disabled Discount Code for Chessington World of Adventure

Thorpe Park Resort, Surrey

Thorpe Park Resort in Surrey is committed to ensuring an enjoyable and accessible experience for all guests. The resort offers a variety of services and facilities to accommodate diverse needs, providing information to guests before they visit, including a brand new Accessibility Day Planner individual to each guest.

Ride Access Pass

To assist guests who may find it challenging to stand in queues due to physical disabilities or cognitive conditions, Thorpe Park provides a Ride Access Pass. This system allows eligible guests to virtually queue for rides, reducing the need for physical waiting. Applications must be completed online at least seven days prior to your visit. Please note that there is a daily limit on the number of Ride Access Passes issued, so early application is advisable.

Carer Tickets

Disabled guests are entitled to one free carer ticket. To obtain this, present appropriate documentation (such as a Disability Living Allowance letter, Personal Independence Payment letter, or a Blue Badge) along with photo ID at the Island Ticket Centre upon arrival. It’s essential to pre-book all tickets online, including carer tickets, before your visit.

Accessible Facilities

The resort is equipped with various facilities to support guests with additional needs:

  • Toilets: Accessible restrooms are located throughout the park. A ‘Changing Places’ facility is available in The Dome, featuring a hoist, adult changing bed, height-adjustable sink, shower, and toilet, with ample space for two carers. Access requires a RADAR key, which can be borrowed from Island Help & Information with a refundable deposit.
  • First Aid: Located outside The Dome next to Island Help & Information, the First Aid center offers medical assistance and cold storage for medications.

Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter Hire

  • Wheelchairs: A limited number of wheelchairs are available for hire from the Accessibility Kiosk on a first-come, first-served basis. A £50 refundable deposit is required. Due to limited availability, guests are encouraged to bring their own wheelchairs to ensure comfort and certainty.
  • Mobility Scooters: The resort does not offer mobility scooter hire.

Parking

Designated parking spaces for Blue Badge holders are available on a first-come, first-served basis near the Welcome Arch. A valid Blue Badge must be displayed, and standard parking fees apply. Parking tickets can be purchased online or at the entrance gates.

Assistance Dogs

Assistance and guide dogs are welcome within the theme park but are not permitted on rides. They are allowed up to the loading points, where they must be left with a member of the party and must never be left unattended.

Accommodation Accessibility

The on-site Thorpe Shark Cabins offer step-free access and a limited number of accessible cabins. These ground-floor cabins are tailored for wheelchair users, featuring accommodations in both the bedroom and en-suite wet room. The wet rooms are equipped with handrails, a seat within the shower, and a lowered sink for added accessibility. Participation Criteria

While iFLY strives to include everyone, certain criteria are in place to ensure safety:

  • Age and Weight: Participants must be at least 3 years old and weigh less than 18 stone and 7 pounds (117 kg).
  • Health Considerations: Individuals who are pregnant, have a history of shoulder dislocations, or have heart conditions should refrain from flying. It’s recommended that those with prior neck, back, or shoulder issues consult their doctor before participating.

  • Wheelchair Accessibility: Most of the fleet is wheelchair accessible, with vessels designed to accommodate passengers using manual wheelchairs. Each boat typically has space for up to two wheelchairs. It’s recommended to contact the reservations team in advance to discuss specific needs and ensure the selected cruise can comfortably accommodate your requirements.

Ride Access Pass

To assist guests who may find it challenging to stand in queues due to physical disabilities or cognitive conditions, LEGOLAND® Windsor Resort provides a Ride Access Pass. This virtual queuing system allows eligible guests to enjoy rides without physically waiting in line. Applications must be completed online at least seven days prior to your visit. Once approved, the Ride Access Pass is valid for three years. Please note, the Ride Access Pass does not include admission; separate entry tickets are required.

Access requires a RADAR key, which can be borrowed from Guest Services in The Beginning if needed.
  • Sensory Space: Located in Heartlake City, the Sensory Space provides a calm environment for guests with additional sensory needs. This facility is open with enhanced cleaning protocols and can accommodate up to four families at a time. Please use this space only if a member of your party requires it.
  • First Aid: Situated in Heartlake City, the First Aid center offers medical assistance and facilities, including cold storage for medications.
     

Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter Hire

  • Wheelchairs: A limited number of wheelchairs are available for hire from Guest Services or the Sensory Space on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests are required to provide photo ID; if unavailable, a £20 holding deposit is taken. Due to limited availability, bringing personal wheelchairs is recommended.
     
  • Mobility Scooters: Available for hire at £25 per day, plus a £25 holding deposit. Pre-booking is essential due to limited availability. Guests must be at least 18 years old and will need to complete a disclaimer and terms of use policy upon hire.

Parking

Designated parking spaces for Blue Badge holders are available near the main theme park entrance. A valid Blue Badge must be displayed, and the badge holder must be present in the vehicle. Parking is charged per car. Car park attendants will direct you to the appropriate spaces upon arrival.

Assistance Dogs

Assistance and guide dogs are welcome throughout the resort, including accommodations. However, they are not permitted on rides. Dogs must be supervised and kept on a lead at all times; they cannot be left unattended while guests are on rides.

Accommodation Accessibility

The resort offers accessible rooms across various accommodations:

  • LEGOLAND® Resort Hotel: Features accessible rooms in themes such as LEGO Friends, Kingdom, Pirate, and Adventure. These rooms include facilities like pull alarm cords, handrails in bathrooms, widened doorways, and lowered fixtures.
  • LEGOLAND® Castle Hotel: Offers accessible Knight-themed rooms with similar amenities to ensure a comfortable stay.
  • LEGOLAND® Woodland Village: Provides accessible lodges equipped with ensuite roll-in showers, handrails, widened doorways, and lowered fixtures. The Clubhouse Restaurant, shop, and entertainment areas also have step-free access.

Disability Cards

Access Card Membership

The Access Card is a valuable tool for disabled people, translating disabilities into symbols that highlight the barriers they face and the reasonable adjustments they might need. It is widely recognised at various venues and events, facilitating smoother access and accommodations. 

You can apply for an Access Card even if you do not claim disability benefits such as PIP. The Access Card is for people with access needs.

Disabled ID (DID) Card

The Disabled ID (DID) card was established in 2014 and has been working to improve the lives of disabled people ever since. The DID card is a nationally recognised Disabled Identification Card.
