Support your spine
Today is World Spine Day and the 2024 campaign is called Support your Spine, it aims to raise awareness about spinal health globally, empowering all ages and nations with evidence-based prevention and management strategies.
Support Your Spine is a call to action for individuals to prioritize spinal health across all aspects of life. The website World Spine Day offers this advice:
“An estimated one billion people suffer from spinal pain with 540 million people at any one time. Low back pain is the single leading cause of years lived with disability worldwide with neck pain ranking fourth. Experts estimate that as many as 4 out of 5 adults will experience a back problem at some time in their lives.”
How to support your spine
Whether at home, in the workplace, schools, or within our communities, fostering healthy habits is essential to support the spine throughout the various stages of life. Here are a few ways to help yourself when it comes to back pain and self care for your back from World Spine Day.
Get active!
- Move your body for at least 30 minutes of physical activity
- Choose exercise you enjoy
- Weight-bearing exercise is great for bone health
- Keep flexible with safe stretching
Sit well
- Ensure proper ergonomics
- Don’t sit for too long
- Take regular breaks
Mobile device use
- Prolonged use of a mobile device in one position can give rise to neck and back pain – set a timer to take a break
Lift well
- Take care when lifting and use your legs
- Ask for help when lifting heavy or awkward objects
- Avoid repetitive lifting, reaching, or twisting
Eat and drink healthy
- Obesity is linked to back pain. Avoid loading your joints by adopting a healthy diet.
- Drink plenty of water
Mental health
- Take time to relax
- Avoid situations where you are under extreme stress
- Learn to recognise the signs of stress, anxiety or depression.
- Seek help from a qualified health professional if you feel you are suffering from mental health issues
Sleep and rest
- Tiredness can make you vulnerable to back pain
- To optimise your health ensure you are getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night
- Take rest breaks if you have a job that involves lots of repetition
