Hello, I’m Funmi Lawal, a passionate entrepreneur and inventor, and I’d like to share my journey with you. Born in Camden, London, on October 16, 1967, my life has been a testament to resilience, innovation, and a deep commitment to improving the lives of individuals facing mobility challenges and disabilities.
My Educational and Professional Background
My educational path took me from earning a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, to achieving a master’s degree in Analysis, Design, and Management of Information Systems from the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). These academic milestones laid the foundation for my career, where I seamlessly blended technical expertise with entrepreneurial vision.
Throughout my professional journey, I’ve had the privilege of working in various industries and holding significant roles that showcased my proficiency in project management and business administration. From managing high-value orders at ORGA Card Systems UK in Dubai to overseeing project life cycles at the Birmingham Management Centre, I honed my skills in strategic planning and operational excellence. My time at Queensland Multimedia Arts Centre and Digital Bananas Technology further enriched my project management acumen and solidified my reputation as a versatile leader capable of driving impactful initiatives.
The Birth of My Visionary Venture
In October 2011, I embarked on a transformative entrepreneurial journey by establishing ‘@Home with Computers,’ an initiative aimed at empowering diverse demographics by imparting essential computer skills. This venture not only reflected my commitment to digital literacy but also highlighted my leadership in fostering inclusive education and empowerment.
However, it is my innovative venture, Clip-Knix, that has gathered widespread acclaim and recognition. Founded in September 2018, Clip-Knix represents a bold innovation in the field of adaptive clothing. Specialising in patented front-fastening underwear designed specifically for women with limited mobility and post-operative needs, Clip-Knix has revolutionised dressing comfort and accessibility. Our products eliminate the need to bend or stretch and can be worn sitting, standing, or lying down.
Overcoming Personal Challenges
My journey into adaptive clothing innovation was deeply personal. Complications from eclampsia led to a stroke, and during my recovery, I searched for ways to regain my privacy and independence but found none. In 2018, I founded Clip-Knix. Despite facing end-stage kidney failure and undergoing a successful transplant in 2011, my resilience shone through. Personal losses, including the deaths of my parents and my 22-year-old son in 2021, only strengthened my resolve to make a difference.
Championing Inclusivity and Innovation
As CEO of Clip-Knix, I’ve been dedicated to introducing innovative products and championing inclusivity in fashion. Our adaptive underwear not only meets functional needs but also prioritises comfort and style, empowering women to feel confident and independent in their daily lives. My meticulous attention to detail in design, production, and retail strategy has positioned Clip-Knix as a trailblazer in the niche market of adaptive clothing. I’m proud to say that Clip-Knix is airing on QVC and has recently signed with Debenhams/boohoo.
Recognitions and Accolades
My work has not gone unnoticed, and I’ve been honoured with numerous awards, including:
- Global Recognition Award 2024
- Athena Awards – Retail, Fashion & Beauty Innovator of the Year 2024
- Winner in the Visual Arts, Fashion, and Design category for the Shaw Trust Disability Power 100 2023
- Small Business Awards 2023 – Adaptive Fashion Entrepreneur of the Year 2023
- SME UK Enterprise Awards – Most Innovative Undergarment Manufacturer 2023 – London
- Finalist FSB Business & Product Innovation Award 2023
- Smallbiz 100 2022 list
- SheInspires Finalist
- Speciality Clothing of the Year 2020/2021
Leadership and Advocacy
I’ve also had the opportunity to serve in several notable positions, such as an advisor to a billion-strong organisation, a member of Meaningful Business, and a representative for patients in the London Kidney Network and the Mortality Surveillance & End of Life Care Group. Acting as an ambassador for Adaptive Fashion with LadyRebel Club and speaking at Naidex 2023 commemorating 50 years of disability support have been incredibly fulfilling roles. Additionally, I’ve served as a director on the board of Spectrum USA’s institutional review board and have been featured in notable magazines such as Metro Online, Financial Times, Mail Online, Mail On Sunday Online, The Mirror, Mylondon News, Voice Magazine, The Orator, and Kidneylife.
A Legacy of Social Responsibility
My entrepreneurial endeavours extend beyond business success to encompass a profound commitment to social responsibility and advocacy. Serving as a Trustee for the Royal Free Hospital Kidney Patient Association reflects my dedication to healthcare support and patient welfare. Moreover, mentoring at the London School of Economics and Political Science underscores my passion for nurturing future generations of leaders and innovators.
Conclusion
My journey is not only a testament to entrepreneurial spirit and innovation but also a beacon of hope and empowerment for individuals with disabilities worldwide. Through my pioneering work at Clip-Knix and unwavering dedication to social impact, I strive to redefine industry norms, champion accessibility, and inspire future generations to innovate boldly and inclusively.
