Disabled people in the UK can exchange the qualifying part of their mobility benefit payment to lease a car through the Motability Scheme.

What is the Motability Scheme?
The Motability Scheme allows eligible disabled people to exchange their qualifying disability mobility allowance for a lease on a new car, scooter, or powered wheelchair. It is really important to understand that the Motability Scheme is not free, you will lose part of your disability benefit in exchange for receiving a vehicle through the scheme. You may also need to pay a deposit depending on the type of vehicle you choose.

Who is Entitled to a Motability Car?
The Motability Scheme is only available for disabled people in the UK who have difficulty getting around. In order to be eligible to join the Motability Scheme you must be receiving one of the following DWP disability benefits and have at least 12 months left on your award.
- Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Enhanced Rate of Mobility for Adult Disability Payment (ADP)
- Higher Rate of Mobility for Child Disability Payment (CDP)
- War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
- Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
If you’re unsure about your eligibility, you can contact the Motability Scheme directly or check your benefits documentation.
Remember, you must have at least 12 months of your mobility allowance remaining to join the scheme.

The Motability Scheme offers a wide variety of vehicles to suit different needs, if you are unsure of what you need, you can use the Motability tool to discover whether a car, a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), a scooter or a powered wheelchair would best suit your needs.
Please note that you may need to pay an Advance Payment (deposit) for your chosen vehicle. The Motability website will tell you if there is one and how much it will be so you can make a decision that best suits your needs and financial situation.

From compact hatchbacks to larger SUVs, there’s something for everyone. Many vehicles come with optional adaptations to improve accessibility, such as hand controls or wheelchair hoists.
Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAVs)

If you prefer there is an option to get your current car adapted, it must belong to you and not be on lease.
How to Choose Your Motability Vehicle
We recommend spending time researching the options available to you first, you can do this by exploring the Motability website. By doing this you can reduce the time required to visit dealerships and test drive vehicles.
You can apply to join the scheme online beforehand or you can join at the dealership, either way you will need to take documentation [link to documents needed section] with you to place the order.
If you are looking for a car, scooter or a powered wheelchair then the best way to apply is to visit a Motability-accredited dealer who can help you through the process.
It’s advisable to phone the dealer to make an appointment, some dealers only have one person who looks after Motability so you want to ensure they are available when you visit. Don’t forget to take your driving licence if you want to test drive a vehicle.
If you think you might want to order it at the same time as test driving then make sure you take all the required documents with you.
If you’re searching for a WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) or an adaptions installer, please don’t worry if they are located far away from you as they will come to your home and help you. You will need to be there to place the order or have an appointee there to represent you.
As there are so many options available, I would recommend that you browse through the Motability website first to narrow down your list of potential vehicles that you are interested in.

How to Order Your Motability Vehicle
You can apply for the Motability Scheme online before visiting a Motability-accredited dealer or you can do it directly with your chosen dealership.
Either way you will need to ensure you have the right documents with you to place your order.
If You Have Already Joined Online
If you have already applied to join the Motability Scheme on the Motability website then please ensure you take the following documents with you when placing your order:
- A UK passport or driving licence for the appointee or customer applying
- Know the National Insurance number (NINO) or Customer Reference Number (CRN) of the person receiving the allowance
If You Want to Join Through the Dealership
- A UK passport or driving licence for the appointee or customer applying
- Know the National Insurance number (NINO) or Customer Reference Number (CRN) of the person receiving the allowance
- Driving licences for all drivers and details of any claims history
- Your driver declaration (if the driver is not there)
- Your grant award letter (if applicable)
It is important to ensure that your address matches on all of the documents you give us.
The dealership will handle most of the administrative tasks, including liaising with Motability and arranging for any necessary adaptations.
Once you’ve applied online or through the dealership you will receive your acceptance letter about two weeks later, with your Personal Identification Number (PIN) and Contract Hire Terms and Conditions. You can then create an online Motability account to help keep your PIN safe and track your order.
How Much Does the Motability Scheme Cost?
How much you pay depends on the allowance you receive and the vehicle you choose.
You can exchange all or part of your mobility allowance to pay for your Motability vehicle. Please be aware that most Motability vehicles will use all of your mobility disability component, this means you will receive less benefit payment each month.
DWP will pay this money directly to Motability so you won’t need to worry about paying the monthly cost.
You may have to pay additional costs if there is an Advance Payment on your choice of vehicle and if you want optional extras.
Advance Payment: Some vehicles require an upfront Advance Payment if the cost of leasing exceeds your allowance.
Optional Extras: Additional adaptations or features not covered by the scheme may incur extra costs.

What is the Advance Payment?
The Advance Payment is an amount of money that you will need to pay upfront for some vehicles on the Motability Scheme. This is an additional payment on top of the mobility component. It is not a deposit and it is non-refundable.
Your mobility allowance might not cover the full cost for some larger or more expensive vehicles which is why you might have to pay an Advance Payment. Motability calculates the additional cost by looking at the total cost of the vehicle, including its servicing and maintenance, and the expected value at the end of your lease.
Motability also negotiates with manufacturers every three months to get you the best price.
If you are required to pay an Advance Payment, the amount is fixed when you order your car.
You will need to pay your Advance Payment directly to your Motability Scheme dealer, either before or on the day you get your vehicle.
If you’re new to the Motability Scheme, you can trade in your old car to help pay your Advance Payment

If you need a certain type of car or WAV but you cannot afford the Advance Payment, you may be able to get financial help through the Motability Foundation. Motability Lease Period and What Happens After it Ends
The Motability Scheme lease generally lasts for three years from the date you receive your car, or five years if you get a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV).
The date will be on your lease agreement.
You have three options at the end of your lease:
- You can lease another vehicle through the Scheme
- You can request to keep your current vehicle for longer
- You can return your vehicle and have your mobility allowance reinstated
Motability will send you a letter to remind you when it’s time to choose your new Scheme car or WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle).
They will also check there are no issues with your current lease and that you’re still receiving your qualifying mobility allowance.
Three months before your current lease ends you can start applying online for a new car, you will need to provide information about yourself, your allowance and any other people who drive your car.
Two months before your lease ends your current dealership should contact you to arrange an MOT on your current vehicle (this does not apply for the Isle of Man or Northern Ireland)
One month before your lease ends any adaptations that you wish to keep from the current vehicle will need to be removed. This is your choice and costs will need to be covered by yourself. Please arrange this with your adaptations installer. Alternatively, you can just leave the adaptations in the vehicle.

How to Extend the Lease on Your Motability Vehicle
Some people prefer to keep their Motability vehicle for longer, this might be because the vehicle has a low mileage, or lots of adaptations which means it would be easier for you to keep using it. You might be able to extend your lease for up to two more years.
You’ll continue to get everything you were receiving before and Motability will cover the cost of your MOT’s. You will still need to get your MOT booked in before your current lease expires and then again in 12 months time. We recommend booking your MOT in for at least one month before it’s due, to allow time for anything to be fixed before your MOT expires.
You can order your next vehicle at any time during your extension, so you do not have to wait if you see a vehicle you would like to switch to.

You can only extend your vehicle once. Three months before it ends you will receive a letter explaining your options.
Returning Your Car to the Dealer
If you are returning your current car to your dealer, you will need to hand back any documents and equipment that was given to you with the car.
These could include:
- The manufacturer handbook
- Spare keys (including any red keys)
- Locking wheel nuts
- A tyre inflation kit
- Radio or key codes
- Satellite navigation SD card
- Remote controls
- Parcel shelves
- Extra seats
Your dealer will check your car and if it’s in good condition you could receive a ‘Good Condition Payment’ a few weeks later.
What is the Good Condition Payment?
Depending on the condition of your vehicle or WAV you may get money back at the end of your lease.
This helps to ensure that Motability vehicles and WAVs are able to be resold. In other words, Motability builds into the scheme a small amount of money for the Good Condition Payment (GCP) into the cost of your lease as a form of guarantee, and returns it to you at the end of your lease.
The amount you receive depends on the length of your agreement. It’s currently £250 for a three-year lease and £350 for a five-year lease.
This will be paid to you automatically, you just need to ensure your bank details are correct on your Motability account.
